Prospect Research
Back to Basics (and Forward to the Future)
By Laurie Holmes | March 26, 2026

If you’ve ever looked at a donor record and thought, “Where do I even start?”—or, on the flip side, “How do I explain this to someone brand new?”—then Apra Fundamentals: Prospect Research is exactly where you need to be.

Taking place April 7–9, 2026, this three-day virtual program is designed to demystify prospect research, ground participants in best practices, and—most importantly—make learning the fundamentals genuinely engaging. Whether you’re brand new to prospect research, transitioning from another fundraising role, or simply want a structured refresher, this event delivers the essential building blocks with clarity, humor, and real-world relevance.

Prospect Research, Explained (Without the Jargon Overload)

At its core, Apra Fundamentals is about answering one simple question: How do we use information responsibly and effectively to support fundraising success? Over three days, participants are guided through the full prospect research lifecycle—from identifying potential donors to managing portfolios and collaborating with development officers.

Sessions cover cornerstone topics like:

  • Prospect Identification
  • Capacity Ratings
  • Creating Research Profiles
  • Portfolio Management
  • Working with Development Officers
  • Ethics, Privacy, and Security

Rather than treating these topics as abstract concepts, the program emphasizes practical application. Participants don’t just learn what prospect research is—they learn how it works in day-to-day fundraising environments.

Learning From the Experts (Who’ve Been There)

One of the strengths of Apra Fundamentals is its instructor-led format. Sessions are taught by experienced prospect research professionals who understand both the technical side of the work and the realities of operating within development teams.

These aren’t theoretical lectures. They’re grounded in lived experience: managing portfolios under pressure, navigating ethical gray areas, and translating complex data into something a busy fundraiser can use. The result is a learning environment that feels supportive, practical, and refreshingly honest about the field's challenges.

Order in the Court! Ethics Takes Center Stage

Just when you think fundamentals might sound a bit… well, fundamental—Apra adds a creative twist.

A highlight of the program is an interactive, courtroom-style role-play that addresses one of the most pressing issues in prospect research today: the ethics of using AI.

In this session, participants become the jury as two prospect researchers debate the benefits and risks of AI-powered research tools. One side argues for caution, emphasizing data provenance, bias, donor trust, and human judgment. The other makes the case for responsible adoption, pointing to efficiency gains, pattern recognition, and the importance of strong governance.

Presiding over the debate is a judge who keeps things grounded with practical questions:

  • What’s the business purpose?
  • Where does the data come from?
  • How will outcomes be measured?
  • And who’s accountable when things go wrong?

The verdict? There’s no single right answer, and that’s the point. This session models how prospect researchers can think critically, ask better questions, and balance innovation with responsibility. It’s thoughtful, memorable, and surprisingly fun for a discussion about data ethics.

Built for Beginners, Useful for Everyone

While Apra Fundamentals is designed with newer professionals in mind, seasoned researchers often find unexpected value in revisiting the basics. The program provides shared language, consistent frameworks, and updated perspectives that can strengthen entire teams.

For managers, it’s a great onboarding resource. For solo researchers, it’s a chance to sanity-check practices against industry standards. And for anyone navigating new tools, privacy concerns, or evolving expectations, it’s a reminder that prospect research is both a technical skill set and a human-centered discipline.

What You’ll Walk Away With

By the end of the three days, participants don’t just leave with notes—they leave with confidence. They understand:

  • How prospect research fits into the broader fundraising ecosystem
  • Why ethics, privacy, and transparency are non-negotiable
  • How to communicate findings clearly and responsibly
  • And how to apply foundational skills in real-world situations

Plus, they’ll have shared an experience with peers who are asking the same questions and facing the same challenges, a reminder that prospect research is a community, not a solo act.

Fundamentals That Last

Apra Fundamentals: Prospect Research proves that learning the basics doesn’t have to be boring. With expert instruction, practical content, and creative approaches to complex topics, this event sets participants up not just to do prospect research—but to do it well.

Whether you’re just getting started or looking to reconnect with the core principles of the profession, April 7–9 is your chance to build a strong foundation—and maybe even enjoy the process along the way.
